Or do you prefer the books? I've just picked up the first two books for 0.99 on my kindle so going to give them a try and see what the differences are.

I'm still working my way through the book. Character names are the same but to me most of the book people are intensely unlikeable.

Okay some quick differences.

Elena's a brunette not blonde, and while her parents are dead she lives with her Aunt Jenna and her slightly younger brother Jeremy instead of a baby sister.
Stefan and Damon are of Italian heritage but their family was one of the Founding Families of Mystic Falls (the town where everything happens) along with Elena's family and some others. They also aren't as old as they seem to be in the books, they became vampires during the Civil War.
Elena, Caroline and Bonnie are best friends.

Caroline is pretty self-centred in an air-head prom queen kinda way, but she's not mean.
